In August 2026 Gathered looked at the make-up habits that can make us look older, and at how the skin changes with age.
Dr Ed explained the two main reasons lines form as we age: loss of volume beneath the skin, and a fall in skin quality.
“As we get older, there are a few changes that happen to the face that contribute to the volume of lines. We lose volume in our face in terms of our fat pads, our muscle bulk and bone structure which all contributes to hollowness over time and causes deep lines to form.”
He added that collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for stretch and bounce, decline over time, which shows up as fine lines that become more obvious with movement. He listed the non-surgical options that can improve these lines, including anti-wrinkle treatments, biostimulators, energy-based devices, radiofrequency, microneedling and polynucleotides.
“Many patients say such treatments leaves make-up sitting better on their faces.”
“In some cases, patients feel like they don’t need to wear it at all because it’s improved their confidence.”

Lines usually have more than one cause, so a plan often combines treatments: anti-wrinkle injections for lines caused by movement, and collagen-stimulating treatments such as biostimulators, polynucleotides, microneedling or energy-based devices for skin quality. Our article on skin boosters, polynucleotides and biostimulators explains the differences.
Smoother, better-hydrated skin with fewer fine lines gives foundation an even surface, so it is less likely to settle into creases.
