Most skin does not age in one neat category. Sun exposure may leave brown marks and background redness, while the surface becomes rougher, less reflective and more finely lined. Treating only the colour can leave the texture unchanged. Resurfacing the texture alone may not deal directly with visible redness or defined sun spots. This is why BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® have become our most frequently chosen laser and light combination at Dr Ed Robinson Clinics.
BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® do different jobs. BBL® HEROic™ is filtered broadband light rather than a true laser. It is used to target brown pigment and vascular colour. MOXI® is a 1927 nm non-ablative fractional laser that creates controlled microscopic treatment zones to support renewal of tone and surface texture. When both technologies have a clear role, they can be performed within one considered appointment and one shared recovery period.
The combination is not automatically better than either treatment alone. If your concern is predominantly redness or a small number of sun spots, BBL HEROic may be enough. If the main issue is early texture, diffuse sun damage or a generally mottled tone without a meaningful vascular component, MOXI may be the more proportionate treatment. This page is for patients whose assessment shows a genuine reason to treat both colour and texture together.

What are BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI®?
BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® are housed on Sciton's mJOULE platform, but they are separate technologies. Combining them does not turn them into a new wavelength or a stronger version of the same treatment. It allows us to address two different layers of a mixed skin concern within one plan.
The role of BBL® HEROic™
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It delivers a range of wavelengths that can be narrowed with filters. The light is absorbed by coloured targets within the skin and converted into controlled heat. Depending on the filter and settings, the intended target may be melanin within a brown sun spot or haemoglobin within superficial redness and vessels.
HEROic is Sciton's newer delivery system. Its Skin Positioning System tracks the handpiece and Intelligent Control supports pulse placement as it moves across the skin. This can help create more consistent coverage, but it does not diagnose pigment or choose the treatment for us. Filter choice, pulse duration, cooling, energy and endpoints still require clinical judgement.

The role of MOXI®
MOXI is a 1927 nm non-ablative fractional laser. The wavelength is absorbed by water within the skin. Instead of removing a continuous sheet of tissue, the roller handpiece places thousands of microscopic thermal zones while leaving surrounding bridges of skin intact. These untreated areas support recovery.
At the surface, the treated microscopic material moves upwards and sheds. This can appear as fine dark speckles, bronzing or a dry sandpaper texture. These are often called MENDs, meaning microscopic epidermal necrotic debris. Beneath the surface, the controlled thermal response initiates repair and gradual remodelling.
MOXI is useful for early sun damage, mottled tone, mild roughness and fine textural change. It is not intended to reproduce the depth or correction of HALO® TRIBRID™ or deep Erbium resurfacing. More detail remains on our dedicated MOXI® page.
A patient may have defined brown sun spots, background redness and a rough or dull surface at the same time. BBL HEROic allows us to treat colour targets. MOXI adds fractional renewal across the wider treatment field. The combined result can therefore look more balanced than improving one element while leaving the other untouched. The cumulative heat, inflammation and recovery must still be considered. A good combination is coordinated; it is not an attempt to do as much as possible in one appointment.
How do BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® work?
Same-day combination treatment usually follows four stages. Staging on separate days remains an option when that gives a clearer margin of control.
Assessment and target mapping
We separate visible concerns into colour and texture. Brown marks, redness and surface change are not treated as one diagnosis. An OBSERV 520X analysis may support assessment and photography where useful. Suspicious pigmented lesions are not treated cosmetically.
The colour-focused stage
BBL HEROic is used for the brown or red targets identified at consultation. The handpiece is cooled and passes are planned by concern and area. A pigment pass and a vascular pass are not interchangeable. We monitor the immediate skin response.
The fractional renewal stage
MOXI then creates a controlled fractional treatment across the planned area. In many same-day protocols, BBL HEROic is performed before MOXI. Energy, density, passes and coverage are adjusted to the skin and to the treatment already delivered.
One recovery period
Colour treatment and fractional renewal can share one appointment and one period of visible healing. The trade-off is that recovery reflects both procedures. BBL HEROic pigment can temporarily darken while MOXI produces dryness, bronzing and roughness.
What concerns can BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® improve?
BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® do not replace lost facial volume, reposition descended tissue or produce a surgical lift. The combination will not correct meaningful jowling, deep folds or laxity caused by structural ageing.
It is not deep resurfacing. It may improve early lines and mild texture, but it is not designed to remove deep acne scars, etched perioral lines or advanced photoageing in one gentle course. These concerns may need HALO® TRIBRID™, ProFractional Erbium, deep Erbium resurfacing, subcision, microneedling or a combined scar plan.
The treatment cannot guarantee complete pigment or vessel clearance. It does not prevent future ultraviolet damage, hormonal pigment change or rosacea activity. Melasma can be stimulated by heat and light, and an apparently brown patch should not be treated as a simple sun spot without assessment.
Adding MOXI does not make BBL HEROic better at treating a discrete vessel, and adding BBL HEROic does not make MOXI a deep scar treatment. If only one technology has a defined task, we recommend one.
Years of ultraviolet exposure can create defined brown marks, background redness, mottled tone and a rougher surface. BBL HEROic can address visible colour while MOXI supports more even fractional renewal.

Which areas can be treated?
The face is the most common treatment area. Suitable patients may also be treated on the neck, the décolletage or chest, the backs of the hands, the shoulders, arms or upper back, and other areas of photodamage where both technologies are appropriate.
Are BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® suitable for me?
The combination may suit an adult with mixed colour and early textural concerns who can accommodate several days of visible recovery and follow sun-avoidance guidance. Suitability depends on diagnosis, natural skin tone, current tan, pigment history, medicines, health and the treatment area.

Do not stop prescribed medicines to make yourself eligible. We will advise whether treatment should be modified, delayed or discussed with the prescriber.
BBL HEROic relies on light being absorbed by colour. Melanin within tanned or naturally more pigmented skin can compete with the intended target, increasing the risk of burns and unwanted darkening or lightening. MOXI can be used across a broad range of skin tones, but the possibility of post-inflammatory pigmentation remains and settings must be chosen carefully. We assess natural skin type and current tan separately. Treatment is postponed when recent tanning reduces the margin of safety.
Melasma is not the same as straightforward sun spots. It is influenced by hormones, ultraviolet and visible light, heat and inflammation. BBL HEROic or fractional laser can worsen it in some patients. If the pattern suggests melasma, the plan may prioritise medical skincare, strict light protection and a more conservative device strategy. We do not promise that combination treatment will clear melasma.
We postpone elective BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® treatment during pregnancy. Breastfeeding requires an individual discussion about skin changes, topical anaesthetic, medicines and any prescribed preparation. Tell us if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding before booking.
A test area may be appropriate when there is increased pigment risk, uncertainty about response or a significant change since previous treatment. It can provide useful information, but it cannot guarantee that a larger field or a combined treatment will be complication-free.
How should I prepare for treatment?
Your preparation is based on your skin and planned settings. General guidance includes:
- Avoid deliberate tanning, sunbeds and significant unprotected sun exposure before treatment. Tell us if your skin colour has changed.
- Remove fake tan fully within the timeframe given by the clinic.
- Use prescribed pigment preparation or medical skincare exactly as directed when it forms part of your plan. Not every patient needs the same products.
- Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, bleaching products and other irritating actives for the interval advised.
- Tell us about new medicines, supplements, illness, antibiotics or a change in health.
- Avoid waxing, depilatory creams, abrasive facials, peels or other energy treatments in the area for the advised interval.
- Tell us if you develop sunburn, a cold sore, active infection, inflamed acne, dermatitis or broken skin.
- Do not apply makeup, self-tan, fragranced products or heavy occlusive products on the day unless instructed otherwise.
- Plan around work, photographs, social events and travel. Makeup may not sit normally while MOXI roughness is present.
- Arrange antiviral medication if it has been prescribed because of your cold-sore history, and follow the timing exactly.
If the skin is not adequately prepared or recent exposure has changed the risk, we may postpone treatment. A delayed appointment is preferable to avoidable injury.
What happens at the appointment?
We review changes in your health, medicines, sun exposure and skincare. The treatment area is examined and photographed with consent. We confirm which concern is being assigned to BBL HEROic, which is being assigned to MOXI and whether both remain appropriate that day.
Health, medicines and recent sun exposure are reviewed. The concern and area are examined again, baseline photographs are taken with consent, and we confirm the plan and expected recovery.
Topical numbing cream is normally applied for the MOXI stage and left for the planned period before being removed thoroughly. The skin is cleansed. You and the practitioner wear wavelength-appropriate eye protection throughout each stage.
The BBL HEROic handpiece is passed systematically over the planned areas. Each pulse can feel like a brief snap of heat. MOXI is then rolled across the treatment field in measured passes. You may feel prickling and steadily building warmth.
The skin is checked before you leave and an appropriate post-treatment product is applied. You receive written aftercare and a contact route for concerns. Redness, swelling and darkening can make the skin look temporarily less even before it improves.
How do you make BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® more comfortable?
The two stages feel different. BBL HEROic is usually experienced as a series of brief hot snaps. MOXI creates more continuous prickling and heat as passes accumulate.
Topical numbing cream is normally used before the combined treatment because of the MOXI component. BBL HEROic contact cooling, careful pacing and communication support comfort during the light-based stage. Cool air or additional surface cooling may be used according to the protocol.
We explain what sensation is expected and ask you to report an area that feels sharply hotter or more painful than the rest. More pain is not evidence of a better treatment. Settings can be adjusted and the procedure can be paused.
Facial nerve blocks are not routinely required for BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI®. Ultrasound guidance has important roles in injectable procedures, but it does not add routine value to a surface light and fractional laser treatment. Comfort and safety here depend on appropriate numbing, cooling, eye protection, treatment technique and honest feedback.
What does recovery look like?
Immediately afterwards
Redness, warmth and mild swelling; brown spots may already appear darker and the skin can feel tight or sunburnt
First 24 to 48 hours
Redness and heat usually reduce; swelling can be more noticeable around the eyes; the skin may begin to feel dry or rough
Days 2 to 5
MOXI bronzing, fine dark dots and a sandpaper texture become more apparent; BBL HEROic-treated pigment may look temporarily darker

Recovery varies with settings, skin type, area and the number of targets treated. A lighter maintenance session may settle more quickly. A more assertive combined treatment can remain visibly rough or bronzed for longer. There is no prize for the strongest inflammatory reaction. The aim is a controlled response that is proportionate to the intended benefit.
Aftercare
Follow the written advice given for your actual settings and treatment area. Common guidance includes:
- Cleanse gently with cool or lukewarm water and a non-active cleanser.
- Use the recommended bland moisturiser, barrier product or recovery skincare. Apply without rubbing aggressively.
- Do not pick, peel, scrub or use a cleansing brush on darkened pigment or MOXI roughness.
- Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, vitamin C products that sting, benzoyl peroxide and other active skincare until advised to restart.
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, swimming and strenuous exercise while the skin is hot, swollen or reactive.
- Avoid direct sun exposure. Use shade and a hat, and apply a suitable broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher once the skin surface can tolerate it.
- Wait for the advised interval before applying makeup. Use clean products and brushes, and do not cover blistered or broken skin.
- Avoid waxing, threading, depilatory creams, peels, facials and other energy treatments until the skin has fully recovered and the clinic agrees.
- Continue prescribed antiviral or other medication exactly as directed.
When should I contact the clinic?
Contact the clinic promptly if pain, redness or swelling is increasing rather than settling, or if you develop blistering, open skin, discharge, spreading redness, marked one-sided swelling, a cold-sore outbreak, an unexpected pigment change or visual symptoms. Seek urgent medical help for a medical emergency.

What are the risks?
Expected short-term effects include redness, heat, tenderness, tightness, swelling, darkening of treated pigment, dryness, bronzing and fine flaking. Some patients experience temporary itch or an acne-like flare as the skin settles.
Combination treatment can produce more cumulative heat and inflammation than either component alone. We reduce risk through diagnosis, sun and medication screening, preparation where indicated, appropriate settings, controlled overlap, cooling, eye protection and clear aftercare. A sophisticated platform does not remove biological risk.
Less common complications
Burns, blistering, crusting or erosions can occur. Prolonged redness, swelling or sensitivity is also possible, particularly after a more assertive combined treatment.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation can occur. Melasma may be worsened or triggered. Patchy pigment or vascular clearance and demarcation between treated and untreated skin are also possible.
Infection or cold-sore reactivation, acne or rosacea flare, persistent textural change or scarring, eye injury if correct protection is not used, and allergic or irritant reactions to topical anaesthetic, cleansing agents or aftercare products can occur. Limited improvement or no visible benefit is also possible.
When will I see results?
Some patients notice clearer, brighter skin once the initial roughness and darkening have shed. Brown pigment, redness and texture do not change on identical timelines, so the full result should not be judged from the first few days.
A useful photographic comparison is often possible at 2 to 4 weeks. Fine textural improvement may continue over the following months. One treatment can be worthwhile for mild concerns or periodic maintenance. A course of three is commonly chosen when photodamage, redness and texture are more established or when a progressive result is preferred.
Courses are often spaced around 4 to 6 weeks apart, but the interval is adjusted around recovery, season, travel and the concern being treated. Repeating treatment before the skin has recovered does not force a better response.
Results are not permanent. Ultraviolet exposure, rosacea, hormones, ageing and lifestyle continue to influence the skin. Maintenance may be helpful, but it should be chosen because the skin still has a defined treatment target rather than because a calendar automatically says another session is due.

Skincare affects both safety and the durability of the result. The right routine depends on whether the dominant issue is sun damage, melasma tendency, rosacea, acne, barrier sensitivity or uncomplicated ageing.
Before treatment
Some patients may benefit from pigment-regulating or prescription skincare. This is prescribed or recommended for a reason and should not be copied from another patient's plan.
During recovery
Simplicity matters. Use gentle cleansing, an appropriate moisturiser or recovery balm and daily light protection. Active ingredients are restarted in stages once the skin is calm and intact.
Once recovered
Antioxidants, retinoids, pigment-regulating ingredients, azelaic acid or other medical skincare may support the wider plan. Buying a new routine from us is not a condition of treatment.

Is the combination better than MOXI alone?
Only when there is meaningful pigment, redness or vascular colour for BBL HEROic to address. MOXI can be used alone for early sun damage, mottled tone and mild texture. We do not add BBL HEROic simply because both handpieces are available. See our MOXI® page for stand-alone treatment.
Are BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® done on the same day?
Usually, yes. A same-day session gives one appointment and one combined recovery period. We may stage the treatments when the skin is reactive, pigment risk is higher, a larger area is planned or one component needs more intensive settings.
Which treatment is performed first?
In many same-day protocols, the colour-focused BBL HEROic stage is completed before MOXI. The final order and settings are decided by the treating clinician according to the target, area and skin response.
How long does the appointment take?
Allow approximately one hour for many facial treatments, with additional time for consultation, photography, cleansing and topical numbing. Face, neck and chest treatment takes longer than the face alone.
Does BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® hurt?
Most patients describe BBL HEROic as brief hot snaps and MOXI as prickling with gradually building warmth. Topical numbing is normally used for the MOXI component, and the BBL HEROic handpiece provides contact cooling. Tell us if one area feels unexpectedly painful.
What is the downtime after BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI®?
Redness, warmth and mild swelling are common initially. Brown spots may darken, while MOXI can produce bronzing, fine dark speckles and a sandpaper texture. Visible shedding often lasts around 5 to 10 days, although settings, skin and treatment area can shorten or extend this.
Is the recovery worse than having BBL HEROic alone?
Usually, yes, because MOXI adds a fractional healing phase. A BBL HEROic-only patient may have temporary redness and pigment darkening without the same widespread roughness or bronzing. The combined recovery should be planned from the MOXI component, not from BBL HEROic alone.
When will I see results?
The skin often looks clearer and brighter once darkened pigment and MOXI roughness have shed. A useful comparison is commonly possible at 2 to 4 weeks. Fine texture and collagen remodelling, where achieved, can continue over the following months.
How many sessions will I need?
One session can produce a visible change in mild photodamage. A course of three is commonly chosen for more established mixed concerns or a progressive result. The response after each session helps determine whether both components remain useful.
How far apart are treatments?
Courses are commonly spaced around 4 to 6 weeks apart. We adjust the interval for healing, skin type, season, travel and treatment intensity. Treatment is delayed if the skin is still reactive or newly tanned.
Can BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® treat rosacea?
BBL HEROic can improve background redness and superficial vessels in some patients with rosacea. MOXI is included only if there is also an appropriate tone or texture target. Active inflammatory, burning or highly reactive rosacea may need medical treatment or a gentler plan first. Neither treatment cures rosacea.
Can the combination treat melasma?
Melasma requires caution. Light, heat and inflammation can worsen it. Some patients may be treated conservatively within a wider pigment plan, but combination treatment is not a guaranteed melasma solution and may be inappropriate. Diagnosis and medical skincare take priority.
Can BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® treat acne scars?
They may improve post-acne redness, brown marks and very mild surface irregularity once active acne is controlled. They are not the primary answer for deep rolling, boxcar or ice-pick scars, which often need scar-specific procedures and combinations.
Does the combination reduce pores?
It may make pores look less noticeable by improving surface texture, tone and the way light reflects from the skin. Pores cannot be permanently closed or removed, and oil or congestion may need separate skincare.
Can it treat the neck and chest?
Yes, for suitable patients. The neck, décolletage and hands are commonly affected by photodamage, but they may heal differently from the face. Areas, settings, recovery and price are confirmed at consultation.
Is BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® suitable for darker skin tones?
MOXI can be used across a broad range of skin tones, but BBL HEROic suitability depends more closely on the colour target, natural melanin, current tan and settings. Darker skin is not an automatic exclusion, but the combined plan requires careful assessment and may be modified, staged or replaced.
Can I have treatment in summer?
The calendar alone does not decide suitability. Treatment may be possible when sun exposure can be controlled, but recent tanning, upcoming holidays and outdoor activity can increase risk. Tell us your plans before booking and expect postponement if the skin is tanned.
Can I wear makeup after treatment?
Wait for the interval given by your practitioner, commonly at least 24 hours, and only apply makeup when the skin is intact and comfortable. Clean products and brushes are important. Makeup may sit unevenly while MOXI roughness is present.
When can I exercise after BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI®?
Avoid strenuous exercise while the skin remains hot, swollen or markedly red, commonly for 24 to 48 hours. Heat and heavy sweating can prolong irritation. Follow the advice for your settings rather than a fixed social-media timetable.
Which skincare products should I stop?
Retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and other irritating actives are usually paused before and after treatment. The exact interval depends on the product, prescription status and skin response. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.
Can I combine BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® with injectables?
Yes, within a planned sequence. Timing depends on the injectable, treatment area, recent procedures and whether the skin is inflamed or healing. Tell us about filler, biostimulators, threads and other treatment performed elsewhere.
What is the difference between BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® and BBL HEROic with HALO?
BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® is generally chosen for colour plus early or mild texture with a more manageable recovery. HALO® TRIBRID™ offers additional wavelengths and ablative capability for more established lines, texture or photoageing. BBL HEROic with HALO is usually a more intensive treatment and is not simply a premium version of the same appointment.
Is BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® included in The Skin Gym PRIVÉ?
Yes. How much does BBL® HEROic™ and MOXI® cost near Altrincham?
At Dr Ed Robinson Clinics, one combined treatment is currently £750 with a skin specialist or £900 with a doctor. A course of three is £2,150 with a specialist or £2,600 with a doctor. Consultation and additional areas may be charged separately.
