What is a men's hormone health consultation?

Testosterone deficiency is a clinical diagnosis that requires compatible symptoms and consistently low testosterone on appropriate blood tests. A single result, age alone or feeling less energetic does not establish the diagnosis. Sleep, weight, medicines, other illnesses and psychological factors can affect both symptoms and test results.

How does a men's hormone health consultation work?

The assessment considers symptoms, examination and blood tests taken under appropriate conditions. A low result usually needs confirmation with a separate early-morning sample. Further tests may help distinguish a problem arising in the testes from one involving the hormonal signals that control them. The cause matters because treatment and referral needs differ.

What concerns can a men's hormone health consultation help with?

Low energy, reduced libido and changes in wellbeing can have several causes. A normal result does not justify hormone treatment for optimisation.

Reduced libido, low energy and changes in mood or concentration deserve a broad assessment. These symptoms are not specific to testosterone deficiency and should not be treated as proof that hormone medication is needed.

Is a men's hormone health consultation suitable for me?

Suitability depends on your symptoms, test results and wider health.

We assess your health, review the timing and circumstances of any previous hormone tests and arrange testing where indicated.

Please tell us about:

  • Fertility plans.
  • Sleep apnoea and cardiovascular disease.
  • Prostate symptoms and previous blood clots.
  • All medicines or supplements, including past anabolic steroid use.

Do not stop prescribed treatment before assessment unless your usual clinician advises it.

Can treatment affect fertility?

Yes. Exogenous testosterone can suppress sperm production. Tell us about current or future fertility plans before any prescribing decision.

How should I prepare for treatment?

Preparation is mainly about bringing the right information.

Your records and medicines

Bring your medication list, relevant test results and details of previous investigations or treatment.

Do not stop or alter prescribed medicines to prepare for this appointment without advice from the clinician responsible for them. Include non-prescription products and supplements in your list.

Previous tests

Explain the timing and circumstances of any previous hormone tests. A result can be affected by timing, illness and other factors.

What happens at the appointment?

The first appointment is a conversation and clinical assessment with Dr Ed. We review your symptoms, health and previous care.

Blood sampling may be required, and tests and review are arranged where indicated. Any proposed treatment has its own discussion of benefits, risks, alternatives, monitoring and cost.

We explain how your GP or other specialists fit into the plan.

How do you make a men's hormone health consultation more comfortable?

We explain the purpose of each test and what its result can and cannot show. Blood sampling is usually brief. Tell the team if you have fainted during blood tests so that we can plan your appointment appropriately.

What does recovery look like?

Attend the agreed review and testing appointments. Report adverse effects or changes in health promptly. Do not adjust a prescribed dose yourself or use products obtained online alongside a treatment plan without discussing them with the prescriber.

1

After the visit

No physical recovery is usually needed from assessment alone.

2

Starting a routine

Introduce any new products according to the written sequence.

3

While settling

Contact the clinic if irritation worsens rather than settling.

4

Review

We review progress over an interval that matches the concern.

When should I contact the clinic?

Contact the clinic promptly if pain, redness or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop spreading redness, discharge, fever or unexpected skin changes. Call 999 for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty or another medical emergency. Do not wait for a routine message reply if urgent care is needed.

Existing patients with a concern after treatment: WhatsApp our complications line on 07868 809125. New enquiries: call or WhatsApp 0161 399 0631.

What are the risks?

If a medical treatment is appropriate, its risks and monitoring requirements are discussed privately. Hormone treatment can suppress sperm production and may be unsuitable when fertility is a priority. Monitoring can include blood count, hormone levels and prostate assessment where appropriate. Certain health conditions require specialist input or make treatment unsuitable. We discuss uncertainties as well as potential benefits.

When will I see results?

Diagnosis and response require scheduled review rather than a single appointment. The first outcome is a clearer diagnosis.

If treatment is justified, we monitor symptoms, blood results and safety rather than judging success from one number. Benefit is variable.

Skincare before and after a men's hormone health consultation

During recovery, use the products and timing recommended for the procedure. Do not put active products onto irritated, raw or incompletely healed skin simply because they are part of your usual routine. Once suitable, daily broad-spectrum sun protection and a manageable skincare routine help care for the skin over time. We can review what you already own and suggest suitable options from our skincare shop. Buying products from us is not a condition of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can one low blood test diagnose testosterone deficiency

Usually not. A result can be affected by timing, illness and other factors. Compatible symptoms and repeat appropriate testing are needed before a diagnosis is made.

Can treatment affect fertility

Yes. Exogenous testosterone can suppress sperm production. Tell us about current or future fertility plans before any prescribing decision; specialist advice or a different approach may be needed.

Could poor sleep explain my symptoms

It may contribute. Sleep apnoea, inadequate sleep, stress, medicines and other health problems can overlap with symptoms attributed to hormones. A useful consultation looks beyond a single test.

Will I need ongoing blood tests

If medical treatment is prescribed, monitoring is part of care. The tests and intervals depend on the diagnosis, treatment and individual risks. It is not appropriate to start a long-term medicine without a follow-up plan.

Can I book if my testosterone is normal

You can seek assessment of persistent symptoms, but a normal result does not justify hormone treatment for optimisation. We may recommend investigating another cause or working with your GP.

Will I be offered treatment at the first appointment

Not necessarily. We may need examination findings, records or tests before recommending anything. A careful consultation is useful even when the outcome is no procedure, a different diagnosis or referral.

Should I stop my current medication

No. Do not stop or alter prescribed medicines to prepare for this appointment without advice from the clinician responsible for them. Bring an accurate list, including non-prescription products and supplements.

Will you work with my GP

We discuss relevant information sharing and how this service fits with your existing care. Some investigations or ongoing management are better coordinated through your GP or a specialist. We explain any referral recommendation.
