Excessive sweating consultation in Hale, Cheshire

Excessive sweating can make everyday tasks, clothing choices and social situations difficult. You do not need to dismiss it as simply being nervous. We assess the pattern, look for an underlying cause and discuss management that fits the areas affected and the impact on your life.

What is excessive sweating treatment?

Hyperhidrosis is sweating that is excessive for the body’s temperature-control needs. Primary focal hyperhidrosis often affects particular areas on both sides of the body. Sweating can also be secondary to a medicine or a medical condition, which changes the assessment and treatment plan.

How does excessive sweating treatment work?

Sweat glands respond to signals from the nervous system. Different management options act at different points, from antiperspirants to iontophoresis and some medical treatments. The choice depends on the site, severity, previous response and health history. We first establish whether managing an underlying cause is more important than treating the sweat glands themselves.

What concerns can excessive sweating treatment help with?

A worthwhile result is an improvement in daily life, not a promise that you will never sweat. Skincare products are not a substitute for assessment of persistent excessive sweating.

Underarm sweating is the most common form of hyperhidrosis. It can mark clothes within minutes, even when you are cool and calm, and strong antiperspirants may only help for a while. If prescription-strength antiperspirants have not been enough, Dr Ed may discuss anti-sweat injections into the underarm skin, which can reduce sweating for several months in many patients. Results vary and treatment usually needs repeating. Sudden new sweating or night sweats should be checked by your GP first.

Sweaty hands and feet can make handshakes, writing, using a phone or wearing open shoes difficult. We treat both the palms and the soles. These areas are more sensitive to treat than the underarms, so comfort is planned carefully. Injections may reduce sweating for a period, but the effect on palms and soles can be shorter, and some people notice temporary weakness of grip. We explain these trade-offs before you decide.

Persistent underarm sweating, wet palms or soles and sweating that interferes with work or daily activities can be assessed. New widespread sweating, significant night sweats or associated illness should be discussed with your GP rather than assumed to be a cosmetic problem.

Which areas can be treated?

Underarms
Hands
Feet

Underarms, hands and feet are common sites. Suitability and available treatments differ by area; an approach used for underarms cannot automatically be transferred to the palms, face or whole body.

Is excessive sweating treatment suitable for me?

Suitability depends on the pattern of sweating, its cause and your general health.

We assess the pattern, look for an underlying cause and consider the effect on your daily life.

Please tell us about:

  • When the sweating began and whether it occurs during sleep.
  • Which areas are affected.
  • Which antiperspirants or treatments you have tried.
  • Current medicines and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medication without advice from the clinician responsible for it.

Fever, unexplained weight loss, chest symptoms or a sudden change in sweating pattern require appropriate medical assessment.

Should I see my GP about night sweats?

Yes, particularly if these are new, persistent or accompanied by fever, weight loss or other symptoms. A cosmetic treatment appointment should not delay investigation.

How should I prepare for treatment?

Preparation is mainly about bringing the right information.

Your records and medicines

Bring your medication list, relevant test results and details of previous investigations or treatment.

Do not stop or alter prescribed medicines to prepare for this appointment without advice from the clinician responsible for them. Include non-prescription products and supplements in your list.

What you want to understand

Explain how your symptoms affect everyday life and what you hope the appointment will clarify. A consultation may lead to further tests, a different treatment, a GP or specialist referral, or reassurance. It does not commit you to a procedure or guarantee a prescription.

A simple record

A short record of sweating episodes and how they affect clothing, grip, work or sleep can be useful.

What happens at the appointment?

The first appointment is a conversation and clinical assessment with Dr Ed. We review your symptoms, relevant examination findings and previous care.

We explain what can reasonably be concluded and what needs further investigation. Any proposed treatment has its own discussion of benefits, risks, alternatives and cost.

You leave with a clear plan and how your GP or other specialists fit into it.

How do you make excessive sweating treatment more comfortable?

We recognise that hands and feet can be particularly sensitive if a procedure is considered.

What does recovery look like?

Follow the product or procedure instructions provided. Keep a simple record of sweating episodes and how they affect clothing, grip, work or sleep. Report new symptoms rather than assuming every change relates to the original hyperhidrosis.

1

After the visit

No physical recovery is usually needed from assessment alone.

2

Starting a routine

Introduce any new products according to the written sequence.

3

While settling

Contact the clinic if irritation worsens rather than settling.

4

Review

We review progress over an interval that matches the concern.

When should I contact the clinic?

Contact the clinic promptly if pain, redness or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop spreading redness, discharge, fever or unexpected skin changes. Call 999 for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty or another medical emergency. Do not wait for a routine message reply if urgent care is needed.

Existing patients with a concern after treatment: WhatsApp our complications line on 07868 809125. New enquiries: call or WhatsApp 0161 399 0631.

What are the risks?

Potential adverse effects depend on the treatment. Antiperspirants can irritate skin; other therapies may cause discomfort, dryness or effects beyond the treated area. Some procedures can temporarily affect nearby muscle function, particularly in the hands. We discuss these issues before choosing an option, including any impact on your occupation.

When will I see results?

Sweating and everyday impact are reviewed after the chosen treatment has had time to work.

Some options require continued use or repeat treatment. We reassess benefit, adverse effects and cost before recommending maintenance.

Skincare before and after excessive sweating treatment

During recovery, use the products and timing recommended for the procedure. Do not put active products onto irritated, raw or incompletely healed skin simply because they are part of your usual routine. Once suitable, daily broad-spectrum sun protection and a manageable skincare routine help care for the skin over time. We can review what you already own and suggest suitable options from our skincare shop. Buying products from us is not a condition of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my sweating is excessive

The effect on daily life matters as well as the amount. Sweating despite being cool or at rest, repeatedly soaking clothing or difficulty handling objects are useful reasons to seek assessment.

Is sweating caused by anxiety

Anxiety can trigger or worsen sweating, but it is not the only explanation. Primary hyperhidrosis is a recognised condition, and secondary causes need consideration when the pattern suggests them.

Should I see my GP about night sweats

Yes, particularly if these are new, persistent or accompanied by fever, weight loss or other symptoms. A cosmetic treatment appointment should not delay investigation.

Will reducing underarm sweating stop me cooling down

The body has sweat glands across many areas, but the effects and suitability of a local treatment still need individual discussion. We do not recommend treating large areas without considering general health and the specific method.

Will I be offered treatment at the first appointment

Not necessarily. We may need examination findings, records or tests before recommending anything. A careful consultation is useful even when the outcome is no procedure, a different diagnosis or referral.

Should I stop my current medication

No. Do not stop or alter prescribed medicines to prepare for this appointment without advice from the clinician responsible for them. Bring an accurate list, including non-prescription products and supplements.

Will you work with my GP

We discuss relevant information sharing and how this service fits with your existing care. Some investigations or ongoing management are better coordinated through your GP or a specialist. We explain any referral recommendation.
