Migraine consultation in Hale, Cheshire
Migraine is more than a bad headache. Recurrent attacks can interrupt work, family life and sleep, and the right plan depends on an accurate diagnosis. We review your headache pattern, current medicines and previous treatment, then explain whether this clinic can help or whether another specialist pathway is more appropriate.

What is a migraine consultation?
Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause head pain alongside nausea, sensitivity to light or sound and, in some people, aura. Not every frequent headache is migraine. Tension-type headache, medication-overuse headache and other conditions may need different management.

How does a migraine consultation work?
Assessment begins with the pattern over time: headache days, migraine features, duration, associated symptoms and how often acute medicines are used. Treatment may involve managing attacks, reducing their frequency, reviewing medication overuse and addressing relevant lifestyle factors. Certain specialist treatments have specific eligibility criteria and monitoring requirements.

What concerns can a migraine consultation help with?
A reduction in attacks may be valuable even if migraine does not disappear. A cosmetic appointment should not be used as a substitute for a migraine assessment.
We can discuss an established migraine diagnosis, frequent disabling attacks or uncertainty about an existing treatment plan. A new severe or unusual headache must be assessed through the appropriate urgent medical pathway rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Which areas can be treated?
Which areas are included depends on your diagnosis, headache pattern and eligibility for treatment. Not every area is treated, and some people are better served by other medical management. A medical consultation with Dr Ed always comes first.
Is a migraine consultation suitable for me?
Suitability depends on an accurate diagnosis and your previous treatment.
We review your headache pattern, current medicines and previous treatment, and consider other causes and medication overuse.
Please tell us about:
- Headache days, severity and associated symptoms.
- All medicines taken, including over-the-counter painkillers.
- Previous preventive treatments, doses if known, duration, benefit and adverse effects.
- Pregnancy plans and other health conditions.
Eligibility for particular treatments can depend on previous preventive care and management of medication overuse.
How should I prepare for treatment?
Preparation makes the consultation more useful.
A headache diary
Bring a headache diary if possible, listing headache days, severity, associated symptoms and all medicines taken, including over-the-counter painkillers.
Your records and medicines
Record previous preventive treatments and why they were stopped. Do not abruptly change regular medicines before your appointment.

What happens at the appointment?
The first appointment is a detailed medical consultation with Dr Ed. We review your headache history, medicines and previous care.
We explain what can reasonably be concluded, what needs further investigation and whether this clinic can help. Any proposed treatment has its own discussion of benefits, risks, alternatives, monitoring and cost.
We explain how your GP or neurologist fits into the plan.
How do you make a migraine consultation more comfortable?
We recognise that light, noise and prolonged concentration can be difficult during an attack. Let the team know if you need adjustments. If a procedure is appropriate, its practical details and comfort measures are explained as part of consent.

What does recovery look like?
After consultation, follow the agreed plan and any advice about contacting your GP or a specialist. Do not abruptly change regular medicines based on this page. Medication-overuse management should be planned with a clinician because the appropriate approach depends on the medicines involved.
After the visit
No physical recovery is usually needed from assessment alone.
Starting a routine
Introduce any new products according to the written sequence.
While settling
Contact the clinic if irritation worsens rather than settling.
Review
We review progress over an interval that matches the concern.
When should I contact the clinic?
Contact the clinic promptly if pain, redness or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop spreading redness, discharge, fever or unexpected skin changes. Call 999 for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty or another medical emergency. Do not wait for a routine message reply if urgent care is needed.
Existing patients with a concern after treatment: WhatsApp our complications line on 07868 809125. New enquiries: call or WhatsApp 0161 399 0631.
What are the risks?
Call 999 for a sudden extremely severe headache, new stroke-like symptoms, collapse or another medical emergency. A headache with fever and neck stiffness, significant new neurological symptoms or a major change from your usual pattern needs urgent assessment. These symptoms should not be managed through routine WhatsApp enquiries. Any proposed treatment has a separate discussion of adverse effects and interactions.
When will I see results?
Progress is reviewed using a headache diary over an agreed review period. We assess headache frequency, severity, function and medicine use.
Treatments are continued only when the benefits and tolerability justify them, using the review criteria appropriate to the chosen option.
Complementary Treatments
Jaw tension and teeth grinding assessment may be relevant when a separate clenching problem contributes to discomfort. It does not replace migraine care. We explain how the consultation fits with your GP or neurologist.

During recovery, use the products and timing recommended for the procedure. Do not put active products onto irritated, raw or incompletely healed skin simply because they are part of your usual routine. Once suitable, daily broad-spectrum sun protection and a manageable skincare routine help care for the skin over time. We can review what you already own and suggest suitable options from our skincare shop. Buying products from us is not a condition of treatment.

Medical thinking
Why choose Dr Ed Robinson Clinics?
Our approach starts with understanding your concern and what you would like to change.
A clear explanation of the recommendation
You should understand why a treatment is being suggested, what it is expected to improve and what other approaches are available. We want you to feel able to ask questions and take time over the decision.
Treatment planned with care
Comfort and what to expect are discussed before any treatment, so you know how the appointment will feel and what happens afterwards.
A plan for the whole process
Preparation, the appointment and recovery belong in the same conversation. Knowing how to care for yourself afterwards is as important as understanding what will happen in the treatment room.

Frequently asked questions
What is chronic migraine
Chronic migraine generally means headaches on at least 15 days a month, with migraine features on at least eight days, for more than three months. A clinician must confirm the pattern and consider other causes and medication overuse.
Can frequent painkillers make headaches worse
Frequent use of some acute headache medicines can contribute to medication-overuse headache. The relevant frequency depends on the medicine. Bring a complete record so a clinician can advise on a safe management plan.
Is migraine treatment the same as cosmetic treatment
No. The diagnosis, eligibility criteria, treatment plan and follow-up are different. A cosmetic appointment should not be used as a substitute for a migraine assessment.
Will I need a scan
Not everyone with a typical migraine history needs imaging. Examination findings, red flags and changes in the pattern guide whether further investigation or referral is necessary.
What if previous preventive medicines have not worked
Bring the details, including how long each was used and why it was stopped. This helps determine whether further options or specialist referral are appropriate. Eligibility for particular treatments can depend on previous preventive care and management of medication overuse.
Will I be offered treatment at the first appointment
Not necessarily. We may need examination findings, records or tests before recommending anything. A careful consultation is useful even when the outcome is no procedure, a different diagnosis or referral.
Should I stop my current medication
No. Do not stop or alter prescribed medicines to prepare for this appointment without advice from the clinician responsible for them. Bring an accurate list, including non-prescription products and supplements.
Will you work with my GP
We discuss relevant information sharing and how this service fits with your existing care. Some investigations or ongoing management are better coordinated through your GP or a specialist. We explain any referral recommendation.
