How Does Botox Change Your Brow Position?

The short answer

Where toxin is placed around the forehead and brows changes how the brows sit. Careful placement can give a subtle inner or outer brow lift. Leaving the outer frontalis untreated can cause a Spock brow, too much in the middle of the frontalis can give an angry look, and too much across the whole frontalis can drop the brows.

In brief

Key Takeaways

  1. 01Brow position after Botox depends on where the toxin goes and how much is used.
  2. 02Treating the muscles that pull the brows down, while leaving the lifting muscle alone, can give a subtle inner or outer brow lift.
  3. 03Spock brow: the outer part of the frontalis is left untreated, so it keeps pulling the outer brow up into an arch.
  4. 04Angry bird: too much toxin in the middle of the frontalis makes the outer brow lift and the inner brow lower.
  5. 05Brow drop: too much toxin across the frontalis overall leaves nothing to hold the brows up.
  6. 06There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Your practitioner should be able to explain why they recommend each injection point.

The Detail

In this video I draw on my own face to show how Botox changes the position of the eyebrows, and the three patterns that happen when placement goes wrong.

The frontalis is the muscle across the forehead that lifts the eyebrows. Other muscles around the brows pull them down. Toxin works by relaxing whichever muscles it is placed in, so the balance between these lifting and lowering muscles decides where your brows end up.

Inner and outer brow lift. Treating the muscles that pull the brows down, while leaving the lifting muscle alone, lets the forehead lift the brows a little. Depending on where it is placed, this can give a subtle lift to the inner or the outer part of the brow.

Spock brow. If the outer fibres of the frontalis are not treated, they keep working while the middle of the forehead relaxes, and they pull the outer brow up into a sharp arch. This is usually easy to soften with a little toxin above the brow at review.

Angry bird. Too much toxin in the middle of the frontalis gives a similar imbalance: the outer brow lifts and the inner brow lowers, which can make you look cross.

Brow drop. Too much toxin across the whole frontalis relaxes the only muscle that lifts the brows, so they can drop and feel heavy. This is harder to correct, which is why a careful, lower dose in the right places matters.

Treatment should always be tailored to your anatomy. An understanding of how the face ages and how anatomy changes is essential to a good outcome, and every practitioner should be able to explain why an approach is recommended. Your result is checked at a review appointment 2 to 4 weeks after treatment, when the toxin is fully working. Unwanted toxin effects are temporary. Most settle sooner, but they can take up to 4 months to wear off.

How Botox changes brow position. Inner brow lift (good). Outer brow lift (good). Spock brow, not treating lateral frontalis (bad). Angry bird, too much in middle of frontalis (bad). Brow drop, too much in frontalis overall (bad). Follow for more anatomy content.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Botox lift my eyebrows?

It can give a subtle lift. Relaxing the muscles that pull the brows down, while leaving the forehead muscle alone, lets the brows sit a little higher.

Why do my eyebrows look angry or arched after Botox?

Usually because of an imbalance in the frontalis: too much toxin in the middle, or the outer fibres left untreated. A small top-up at review can often soften it.

Can Botox make my brows drop?

Yes, if too much toxin is placed across the frontalis, the only muscle that lifts the brows. Unwanted effects are temporary and can take up to 4 months to wear off.
