In September 2024 London Daily News reported that stressed patients were turning to private treatment for jaw clenching and teeth grinding rather than waiting for NHS care.
Dr Ed said demand for masseter toxin, sometimes described as injectable stress relief, had quadrupled at his clinic over the previous year.
“I have had so many patients coming to me in a tremendous pain unable to endure the lengthy waiting time to be seen on the NHS.”

He explained that many of these patients felt stuck in the system while waiting for an NHS appointment.
Jaw pain and clenching can have several causes, including stress, dental problems and disorders of the jaw joint, so assessment matters before any treatment. A dentist can check for tooth wear and advise on a night guard. Toxin in the masseter can reduce excessive muscle activity in suitable patients, but its use for bruxism is outside the product licence, which is why careful selection and consent are important. Read about masseter treatment and watch this short video.
It can help when overactive muscles are contributing, but it is not a cure for all jaw pain and works best after proper assessment.
