Is It Ever Too Early To Start Botox?

3 March 2025

Country & Town House · Expert comment ·

In March 2025 Country & Town House asked whether it is ever too early to start Botox, as younger people increasingly ask about preventative treatment.

What Dr Ed said

Dr Ed began with the medicine's history. He explained that botulinum toxin has been used medically for decades, including for migraine and the bladder, and that its cosmetic use grew from the 1990s after patients treated for eyelid spasms noticed their lines had softened.

“It reduces conscious muscle movement so when you want to move a muscle, the muscle will move less,”

Dr Ed Robinson, speaking to Country & Town House

Used cosmetically, he said, this softens expression lines and, as a consequence, static lines on the forehead and between the brows.

Clinical context

Whether someone is too young for toxin depends less on age than on whether they have lines that bother them and a realistic understanding of the treatment. Very early or frequent treatment is not necessary for most people, and in England it is illegal to give cosmetic toxin to anyone under 18. Daily sunscreen remains the most effective preventative step. Read about anti-wrinkle injections and our treatment by age guide.

Questions patients ask

What is the right age to start Botox?

There is no set age. It depends on your lines, concerns and expectations, and many people never need it.
