Redness in the skin is common, often following warm temperatures, exercise or sun exposure. Occasionally, redness can persist and in some individuals redness and flushing can be present all the time, with an exaggerated response to external factors.
Over time, this can worsen and sometimes result in visible broken blood vessels on the face, as well as swelling of the face and neck.
This is referred to as Rosacea and sometimes co-exists with blemishes and oily skin on the face. For individuals affected, rosacea can be distressing and get in the way of day to day life with some people experiencing a significant impact on their confidence and self-esteem.
Understanding Rosacea and Redness
There are several factors that contribute to rosacea and redness:
-
GENETICS
A family history can increase susceptibility. -
BLOOD VESSEL ISSUES
Overactive or enlarged vessels cause flushing and persistent redness. -
IMMUNE RESPONSE
Sensitivity to skin microbes (like Demodex mites) can trigger inflammation. -
LIFESTLE AND ENVIRONMENT
Sun, alcohol, spicy food, stress, or temperature changes often worsen symptoms.
